DNR offers tips to prevent snowmobile accidents in Wisconsin

During the winter season, many Wisconsinites like to ride their snowmobiles. Snowmobiling is a favorite activity in the winter for many people in the state. It is not uncommon to see packs of snowmobiles riding in the snow next to the road. Snowmobiles can provide a lot of fun and enjoyment during a time when the weather can get you down. However, it is important for people to be aware of the risks of snowmobile accidents and safety tips to stay safe.
To keep snowmobilers safe, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recently celebrated International Snowmobile Safety Week to promote safety during snowmobile season. The DNR reported that seven people have already died in snowmobile accidents in Wisconsin this winter season. They said alcohol, speeding and riding at night contributed to the accidents.
Snowmobile accidents can result in fatalities as well as very serious injuries for those involved. Some snowmobile accidents involve another snowmobile or motor vehicle while others involve hitting another object or being ejected from the snowmobile. All of these types of accidents can be deadly so it is important for riders to be aware of what safety steps to take to prevent an accident.
What can snowmobilers do to prevent an accident? The DNR said snowmobilers need to ride at a safe speed and slow down, especially in areas with higher traffic or when crossing roads or railroad tracks. They also recommend always wearing a helmet and don’t drink alcohol before or while driving. They also say snowmobilers can benefit from taking a safety course to improve their driving skills.
Other safety tips include carrying a first-aid kit and wearing appropriate clothing to safe warm. It is also very dangerous to ride a snowmobile across bodies of water, especially when it is difficult to tell how thick the ice is. The DNR says to never travel alone and to only use designated trails or stay on the right shoulder to prevent accidents.
