It’s pretty much everyone’s nightmare: waking up in your bed to a stranger attacking you. That was the reality for a 75-year-old woman over the weekend, and the outcome was gruesome. Now a man who left prison is being held for her wrongful death after police caught up with him in Madison.
The man was released from the South Dakota State Penitentiary late last week. According to the Argus Leader, he was released to a minimum security unit because of good behavior. He was not reviewed by a parole board at all. Soon after arriving, he somehow walked away – something he had already done back in 2009.
The man then went on a bizarre spree in his quest to apparently attempt to kill President Obama. After making his way across states, he apparently stole some knives, found himself in a neighborhood of townhomes and noticed one where the garage door was slightly open. He made his way inside, found the woman sleeping and waited for her to wake up.
What happened next is downright gruesome: he stabbed her in the clavicle, and as she tried to fight back by kicking her legs, he slashed her throat. He took her keys and stole her 2007 Buick Lucerne. Police ultimately caught up with him in the Madison area by using the woman’s OnStar navigation system in her car.
For his horrific crimes, the man was being held in the Dane County Jail in Madison, but he was soon to be extradited to South Dakota. He is looking at counts of first-degree murder and four counts of first-degree burglary. If convicted of murder, he could face the death penalty. He could also find himself in civil court if the victim’s family pursues a lawsuit for wrongful death.
