Identifying strange noises from your car
On behalf of Milwaukee personal injury attorney Ric Domnitz of Domnitz & Domnitz, S.C. posted in Car Accidents on Wednesday, April 3, 2013.
As our cars get older, we come to expect some weird (and annoying) noises. They may just be symptoms of an aging vehicle (i.e. creaks or rattling) or they could be something more serious. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) less than 10 percent of car accidents are caused by mechanical failures; which ostensibly means that driver error accounts for a large majority of crashes.
Still, some accidents can be prevented by paying attention to unusual noises and knowing when to take your car in for repairs. Through this post, we will identify several noises and why you should be concerned.
Squeaks – These often can be attributed to worn brakes. When you hear this noise, chances are that they need to be replaced.
Whining – This could be attributed to worn belts in your engine, especially if these sounds are heard when the engine is first started.
Growls – This noise may come and go, especially when you change lanes or make turns. However, it could be a symptom of defective wheel bearings.
Humming – Especially when heard at highway speeds, can indicate that your tires are worn. Many tire issues occur when they have not been rotated, or they have been worn on the inside, where they are hard to see.
By themselves, these issues may seem benign, but together they could be a recipe for disaster. After all, drivers have a legal duty to ensure that their vehicles are in safe operating order while on the road. Drivers who breach this duty (by driving on bad brakes for example) could be held liable for causing an accident.
