Charges Filed in Wisconsin Nursing Home Abuse Case
On behalf of Milwaukee personal injury attorney Ric Domnitz of Domnitz & Domnitz, S.C. posted in Nursing Home Abuse on Monday, September 13, 2010.
A woman is being charged in a recent nursing home abuse lawsuit in Wisconsin. According to recent news reports about the case, a Beaver Dam woman who worked in a Columbus nursing home instructed her co-workers to watch as she abused three patients. Reports detail the woman pinched closed patients’ noses and held pillows on their faces. As a result, the woman was charged with “six counts of intentionally subjecting an individual at risk to abuse while she worked as a certified assistant at Columbus Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.”
The charges are backed by testimony of the woman’s two co-workers that saw the woman hold pillows over the faces of crying patients and waking up patients by pinching their noses without attempting to wake them up in a “friendly” fashion. In one instance, workers witnessed the woman placing a pillow over a patient’s head, who was already screaming and shouting, for 10 to 15 seconds. If the shouting persisted, the woman would place her hand on the patient’s mouth of extended periods of time.
The woman was released from Columbia County Jail Thursday on $10,000 signature bond which “stipulates she cannot have contact with any nursing homes or act as a nursing assistant until the charges are cleared.” The woman denies all the charges against her. According to news reports, the Columbus Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has been cited for a number of health violations in the past. In 2008, the center had 15 violations compared to Wisconsin state average of 7.1. These violations ranged from quality of care issues to freedom from restraints or abuse.
