Milwaukee Bus Statistics Hold Surprising Numbers
Wisconsin state bus accident statistical information
On behalf of Milwaukee personal injury attorney Ric Domnitz of Domnitz & Domnitz, S.C. posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Friday, August 15, 2014.
According to 2012 statistics compiled by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, someone is either hurt or killed on a school bus in the state of Wisconsin every 75.1 hours. Now that statistic may seem rather high, but it’s important to remember the school bus accident isn’t just when the bus collides with another vehicle. In fact, many school bus accidents occur as riders are either entering or exiting the bus. The following are some interesting “crash facts” statistics from the WDOT:
— The time of the day most bus accidents occur in Wisconsin is between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., with 112 reported accidents in 2012.
— The second most frequent time of accidents to occur between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., with 97 accidents.
–Inattentive driving is listed as the greatest possible contributing circumstance of bus crashes in 2012.
— Inattentive driving is believed to have contributed to at least one fatality and 35 injuries.
— Males are more likely to be either injured or killed as a result of school bus accidents.
— 57 males were either injured or killed in 2012 as compared to 60 females.
— The majority of school bus accidents occurred under the control bus drivers between the ages of 55 to 64.
The numbers mentioned are not a complete analysis of statistical data but are useful to illustrate some of the dangers facing our young children every day they go to school. The sad reality is that despite substantial gains in the efforts to diminish school bus-related accidents, they still occur.
Wisconsin residents need to know that state laws provide a legal civil remedy for children who may have been injured as a result of a preventable bus accident. While no outcome can be guaranteed, it may be possible for victims of such accidents to receive compensation for their injuries and for their pain and suffering.
