New standard proposed aimed at lowering bus accident injuries

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is responsible for the safety of those who travel on the country’s roadways. The organization has proposed a new safety standard meant to protect passengers traveling on motor coaches and other large vehicles, such as buses.
The new federal motor vehicle safety standard is aimed at protecting passengers in the event that the vehicle in which they are traveling rolls over. If this safety standard is passed, it would establish a variety of performance requirements that would improve the safety of vehicles in this category. The proposal would do the following:
— Require the space around passenger seating to be maintained in the event of a rollover accident
— Require emergency exits to remain closed during rollover testing, with the same exits being operable after testing
— Require that seats, window glazing and luggage racks remain attached throughout the test
This is a change that the NHTSA would like to see, as it is modeled largely after what is currently in place in Europe. On top of this, the NHTSA is also working on requirements that would add stability control technologies in larger vehicles, helping them avoid rollovers altogether.
While nobody thinks about being involved in a bus accident — not the people on board or those around them in other vehicles — this is something that occurs frequently throughout the United States. If you or a loved one is injured in such an incident, you may wish learn more about your right to seek compensation for many civil claims.
